(Now Retired)
Jim has over 40 years of experience in the computing and communications industries. Throughout his career at AT&T, Lucent, Intel and, now, Carnegie Mellon University, he has focused on the commercialization of emerging technologies at the intersection of media processing, human interaction, global distributed computing and networking. At the Living Edge Lab, he works with the world’s leading edge computing experts to explore the boundaries of edge computing. He loves to find real and valuable applications for new technologies – starting with his early work at Bell Labs in speech technologies through intelligent network services, software defined networks, server virtualization, cloud computing, video and artificial intelligence to his current work in edge computing. While keeping his technology edge, he has led organizations from small product development and product management teams to entire business units and has a passion for applying systems engineering and business strategy to taking technologies across the chasm.

Jim holds 10 patents for telecommunications and cloud systems and is the author of numerous publications. He holds a Masters in Management from the Kellogg Graduate School of Management, a Masters of Communication, Information and Control Engineering from the University of Michigan and a BS in Electrical and Computer Engineering also from the University of Michigan. He is a Sr. Member of the IEEE and was a Distinguished Member of Technical Staff at Bell Labs. He is a former Oregon Health and Sciences University adjunct faculty member.

When he’s not working, Jim spends as much time as possible with his family and outside – hiking, biking, sailing, backpacking, traveling to new and interesting places or just walking around town. His love of the outdoors extends to a deep concern for the environment and a strong interest in the science, technology, economics and policy of climate change and renewable energy.
